About
My love for photography started back when I first borrowed a camera from a friend when in high school, my love for this slice of Rhode Island started back when I was around five. I still remember my first time over the Newport Bridge, my aunt had bought me a small toy bus with an opening at the top that revealed small plastic characters inside, as well as an array of interactive buttons on the side depicting the alphabet. After a while of tinkering with my new toy, mom’s telling me to take a look out the window. We’re about half way up the bridge coming into town from Jamestown, and little me is in complete awe of the view of the harbor.
Growing up here I went to Carey and Cranston Calvert before going to Thompson and Rogers. I also had the pleasure of taking part in the afterschool and summer programs at the Martin Luther King Community Center. Still vividly remember the puppy-eyed-begging of camp counselors to take us to Second Beach instead of Third. I remember when I was so small that each wave appeared massive. These memories flood back when I look at some of these photos. I can almost see and feel that yellow toy bus in my small hands again, feel the waves lift me up, and taste the turkey sandwich and chips after choking on laughter with friends at the beach.
I’ve had these photos hanging up at Newport Family and Cosmetic Dentistry on Broadway where I work. There have been countless patients who bring up all kinds of stories after taking a look at the prints on the wall. From romantic moments, to beach days gone bad, anyone who’s been around for long enough has a story to tell. My hope is that these hobby-turned-business photos appease the locals, snowbirds, and tourists alike.
